Tawang sits at about 2,700m in western Arunachal Pradesh, close to the Tibetan border. The road in climbs for two days from Guwahati through Tezpur, Bomdila and Dirang, then crosses the 4,170m Sela Pass, the gate that keeps Tawang empty and extraordinary.
The town’s centrepiece is Tawang Monastery, founded in the 17th century, the largest in India, second largest in the world, with a Dukhang hall, a giant Buddha and monks’ quarters stacked on the ridge. Around it: the 1962 War Memorial, Madhuri Lake (Shungtser Tso) with its pine-stump stumps, Pangateng Tso, the Nuranang waterfall near Jang, and Bum La Pass on the China border when permits allow.

How many days are enough for Tawang?
Plan 5–6 days from Guwahati including the two road days each way, with 2–3 days in and around Tawang. From Tezpur, 4 days is a realistic minimum.
How do I reach Tawang?
Road only: Guwahati or Tezpur → Bomdila/Dirang → cross Sela Pass → Tawang (~447km from Guwahati, two days of driving). Nearest airports: Tezpur and Guwahati. Shared Sumos and occasional state buses run the route.
Is Tawang safe for tourists?
Yes, including solo travellers. The roads are winding mountain roads; hire an experienced local driver unless you have serious mountain-driving experience. Register at checkposts with your permit and ID.
Do I need a permit for Tawang?
Indian nationals need an Arunachal Pradesh ILP (we arrange it with our packages). Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Bum La and other border areas need additional permits issued locally.
