Guwahati to Tawang itinerary, the 6-day route, stops and honest timings
Quick answer: Guwahati → Tawang is ~447km that takes two days each way, the honest minimum circuit is 6 days. The standard spine: Day 1 Guwahati → Dirang (long day), Day 2 Dirang → Tawang via Sela Pass, Days 3–4 in Tawang (monastery, lakes, Bum La if permitted), Day 5 Tawang → Dirang/Bomdila, Day 6 back to Guwahati. Fewer days means cutting Tawang itself, not the road.
The 6-day route (the one our package runs)
Day 1, Guwahati → Dirang. Out through the plains past Tezpur, climb after Bhalukpong checkpost (permits checked), tea-estate country into Bomdila; overnight Dirang (hot springs, Dirang Dzong).
Day 2, Dirang → Tawang. The big morning: the 4,170m Sela Pass, frozen lakes, prayer flags, the Welcome arch, then the descent past the Nuranang (Jang) waterfall into the Tawang valley.
Day 3, Tawang. The monastery at morning prayers, largest in India, second largest in the world, the Dukhang, giant Buddha, library; afternoon at the 1962 War Memorial and town.
Day 4, Lakes and passes. Madhuri Lake (Shungtser Tso) and Pangateng Tso; Bum La on the China border when permits and weather allow (permit notes).
Day 5, Tawang → Dirang/Bomdila. Sela again (it looks different going south), Jang falls stop.
Day 6, → Guwahati. The long descent; evening drop at airport/rail.
Where should you stop overnight?
Dirang over Bomdila is the better night on the way up, higher, prettier, hot springs, and it makes the Sela crossing a shorter morning. Bomdila works fine as the split on the way down. Staying IN Tawang town beats the Jang side: monastery at dawn, walks after dinner.
Can you do it faster?
- Ex-Tezpur in 4 days: Tezpur → Dirang → Tawang → 2 nights Tawang → back. Tight but real, Tezpur airport exists precisely for this.
- 3 days Guwahati–Tawang–Guwahati: technically possible in clear weather and brutal in reality, two mega driving days sandwiching one Tawang day. We don’t sell it for good reason.
- Skip Bomdila/Dirang nights? Only ex-Tezpur. From Guwahati the two-day climb is the road, not a choice.
Practical rules for the route
Start early every day; Sela is crossed best before early afternoon. Permits (ILP for Indians) get checked at Bhalukpong, carry originals plus copies.
