Tawang in winter, is it open, does it snow, and what about Sela Pass?

Quick answer: Tawang is open in winter, but the road in is the gamble. Sela Pass (4,170m) stays officially open through December most years, with snowfall closing it temporarily for hours or days after storms; January–February is the risky window when closures get longer. If Sela shuts, you wait it out in Dirang or Bomdila, there is no other road. Winter Tawang, when you get there, is snow-dusted, silent and spectacular. Keep a buffer day.

Is Tawang open in December? January? February?

Yes, the town itself never “closes”, monasteries don’t have seasons. The question is always Sela Pass. December trips mostly succeed; January–February see more frequent closures; the pass reopens after clearing, usually within a day or two. The practical rules:

• Check road status the day before and the morning of the Sela crossing.
• Never plan a winter Tawang trip with zero slack, one buffer day solves 90% of it.
• Travel early in the day; afternoon weather on the pass is worse.

Does it snow in Tawang?

The town (2,700m) gets light-to-moderate snowfall, heavier spells in Jan–Feb. The pass and the lakes around it, Sela’s frozen lakes, Sangester/Madhuri at height, are where winter is dramatic. Snow on the monastery at dawn is the photograph people come for.

What happens if Sela Pass closes?

You wait, in Dirang or Bomdila on the way up, or in Tawang on the way down. Hotels in both are used to weather-stranded travellers; BRO clears the pass as fast as conditions allow.
