Sela Pass closed? The plan-B guide for your Tawang trip

Quick answer: Sela Pass (4,170m) closes temporarily after snowfall or landslides, usually for hours, sometimes a day or two, and there is no alternative road. The plan-B playbook: wait it out at Dirang or Bomdila (warm homestays, hot springs, monasteries), keep Tawang’s days flexible, and let your driver watch the status. Every closed pass reopens; every good Tawang trip survives one.

The moment it happens

You’re at Dirang (or worse, Bomdila) and the word comes down: pass closed. Two moves: (1) extend your stay where you are, both towns absorb stranded travellers constantly, (2) tell your operator to re-sequence: Tawang days compress, buffer days absorb. If you’re already IN Tawang when it closes, enjoy it; you’re on the good side, with the monastery to yourself and thinning crowds as day-trippers dry up.

What to do while waiting

• Dirang: the hot springs by the river, Dirang Dzong’s old stones, Sangti Valley’s wide sheep-country views.
• Bomdila: the hilltop gompas, the market, views toward the ranges.

How long do closures last?

Snow closures: typically cleared by BRO within hours to a day or two. Landslide closures (monsoon): similar. Multi-day closures are rare and follow major storms. The BRO (border roads organisation) keeps the pass open as a strategic priority, it’s the only road to Tawang.
