Tawang and Mechuka in one trip? The honest feasibility answer
Quick answer: Yes, but it’s a 10–12 day expedition, not a holiday hack. Tawang (west Arunachal) and Mechuka (west-central Siang) sit in different corners connected by long mountain roads with no good direct link, the practical route doubles back through Pasighat/Aalo or via a long Trans-Arunachal stretch. Both need the ILP. With fewer than 10 days, pick one.
The road math
- Tawang sits on the western arc: Guwahati → Tezpur → Bomdila/Dirang → Sela → Tawang (2 days each way).
- Mechuka sits further east: Dibrugarh/Pasighat → Aalo → Mechuka (2 days each way from the east).
- Direct Tawang ↔ Mechuka: there is a Trans-Arunachal route (Tawang → Bomdila → Bhalukpong? no, via Itanagar-side and the Trans-Arunachal Highway through Pasighat/Aalo), realistic with good roads: 3–4 long days. Roads upgrade yearly; conditions rule everything.
The two honest shapes
Shape A (10–12 days, both valleys): Guwahati → Dirang → Tawang (3 nights) → the long Trans-Arunachal traverse via Pasighat → Aalo → Mechuka (2 nights) → Dibrugarh → fly out. An expedition for road-trip obsessives. Permits + buffer days + expedition vehicle mandatory.
Shape B (5–6 days, one valley): Tawang or Mechuka, done properly. Our Tawang & Sela package is Shape B, perfected.
When it makes sense
Second or third Northeast trip, motorcycle groups (the Trans-Arunachal is a bucket-list ride), road-trippers with 12+ days and flexible dates. First trip to Arunachal: do Tawang. Mechuka yearning: do Mechuka ex-Dibrugarh. The combo waits for the big trip.
