Is Arunachal Pradesh Safe for Tourists? The Honest Answer
Yes, Arunachal Pradesh is safe for tourists on its established circuits: Tawang, Ziro, Dirang-Bomdila, Mechuka, Pasighat. Crime against travellers is rare, villages are warm, and the state runs on tourism goodwill. The real risks are roads, weather and altitude, not people.
What “safe” means here
- Roads: mountain highways, landslides in monsoon, snow on Sela from December. Travel daylight only, with drivers who know the passes. Our Sela closure plan B is the honest backup.
- Permits: the ILP is mandatory for Indians, PAP for foreigners, online in advance. The permit guide walks you through it.
- Border areas: Arunachal fronts China, Bhutan and Myanmar; some zones need extra inner-line permissions and a few are closed. Stick to open circuits unless locally guided.
- Altitude: Sela (4,170m) and Tawang nights bite; pace your first day.
The circuits, judged
- Tawang: the classic, busy by Arunachal standards, fully workable. Guide.
- Ziro: the easy plateau, festival season aside it is very quiet.
- Mechuka: far, gorgeous, worth the drive. Guide.
- Anini: the deep end. Guide.
