The Nyishi People: Arunachal's Largest Tribe
The Nyishi are Arunachal Pradesh’s most populous tribe, around 300,000 people spread across the central and western hills, from Papum Pare down through Kamle and into Pakke-Kessang. Their homeland guards some of the state’s easiest gateways: Itanagar itself sits in Nyishi country.
The hat with the hornbill
The classic Nyishi image is the men’s cane basketry hat crowned with the great hornbill’s feather and beak. The bird’s conservation story rewrote the tradition: with hornbills now protected, most festival hats carry carved or synthetic beaks, and ex-hunter turned guide groups around Pakke protect the birds instead. It is one of the cleanest conservation turnarounds in the region.
Nyokum, the festival
Nyokum (celebrated around February 26, festivities running several days) gathers the Nyishi year: prayers to the spirits of land and harvest, communal feasts, and dance lines that pull every visitor into the circle. District-level Nyokum outside Itanagar is the gentler door if you want the festival without the biggest crowds.
Travelling Nyishi country
Pakke Tiger Reserve’s hornbill country, the Eaglenest-side birding routes (treks of the region) and the roads to Tawang all cross Nyishi lands. ILP first: the permit guide sorts it online.
