Treks of Northeast India, Dzükou vs Goecha La vs Sandakphu, compared
Quick answer: Three signature treks, three different lives: Dzükou (2–3 days, moderate, grassland valley) is the best first Himalayan-style trek; Goecha La (8–10 days, Sikkim, Kanchenjunga’s face) is the serious expedition; Sandakphu (5–7 days, Darjeeling side, four 8,000ers visible) is the classic ridge walk. Start with Dzükou, it’s ours, it’s guided, and it’s ₹4,299 all-inclusive.
Dzükou Valley, Nagaland, the accessible classic
Rolling grass-and-bamboo valley at ~2,400m behind the Japfü range, with streams, caves and seasonal lilies. 2 days/1 night from Kohima or Dimapur; moderate difficulty; guided treks include everything. Season: Oct–Dec, Mar–May. The best effort-to-reward ratio in the region, and the only one combinable with Hornbill week.
Goecha La, Sikkim, the expedition
8–10 days from Yuksom to the pass facing Kanchenjunga’s southeast face, through Dzongri’s rhododendron forests and high meadows. Demanding: altitude to 4,900m, camping throughout, serious fitness. Permits via registered Sikkim operators. Do Dzükou first; earn Goecha La.
Sandakphu, Darjeeling side, the ridge classic
5–7 days along the Singalila ridge, the only trek on earth that shows you four of the five highest peaks on earth (Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga) from the summit. Tea-house stays (no camping), moderate difficulty, best views October–December and March–April. Reachable via Darjeeling from NJP.
