Why the combo works

The festival is loud, social, sensory overload. Dzükou is silent, green, empty. Doing them back-to-back isn’t a compromise, it’s the point. And logistically they’re neighbours: the Dzükou trailheads are a short drive from the Kisama–Kohima corridor, and our festival camp sits right at the junction.

The 7-day plan

• Day 1: Dimapur → Kisama camp. Evening: night carnival in Kohima.
• Days 2–3: Hornbill Festival, arena mornings, morungs, food stalls, concerts.
• Day 4: Trailhead drive → trek in → camp on the valley rim (trek guide).
• Day 5: Dzükou mornings, streams, bamboo groves, the valley floor, trek out, back to camp for a hot dinner.
• Day 6: Khonoma afternoon + Kohima market.
• Day 7: Kohima → Dimapur, out.

Which order?

Festival first, trek second. You’ll want fresh legs for the trek, and the camp’s post-trek dinner after three days of carnival is the best meal of the trip. (Trek-first works if you’re chasing a specific festival date, the opening ceremony on Dec 1 is Statehood Day and worth structuring around.)

Fitness and season

Moderate, a steady climb in, a stroll out. Basic fitness covers it; see the trek difficulty notes. December is cold at the camp (near-freezing nights), thermals are non-negotiable. Monsoon closes the valley; December is prime.
