- Trailhead
- Viswema, about 1h from Kohima
- Climb
- 4–5h to the valley floor
- Duration
- 2 days / 1 night
- Season
- Access varies, check status
The Dzükou Valley sits at about 2,400m, a wide bowl of grassland and stream behind the Japfü range, reached on foot from Viswema or Zakhama. The climb from the Viswema trailhead takes four to five hours; most trekkers camp or take the rest house for a night and descend the next morning.
In the monsoon the valley fills with the Dzükou lily, which grows here and almost nowhere else. From October the grass turns gold and the views open right across the ranges.

Permits & season
ILP required for Indian nationals outside the Hornbill window (waived Dec 1–10 with photo ID), online at ilp.nagaland.gov.in; foreign nationals pay a fee.
October to March is the clean window; December adds the Hornbill Festival, and the monsoon makes eastern roads slow.
Things to do
What you're here for
The valley floor
Open grassland, a cold stream, and no signal worth mentioning.
Dzükou lilies
Blooming in the monsoon months, June to September.
The climb
Forest and bamboo staircases, steady, moderate, worth it.
Sunrise above the clouds
The reason trekkers stay the night.
Getting there
From Kohima, drive about an hour to the Viswema trailhead, then climb 4–5 hours to the valley.
Access and camping rules change season to season, we confirm the current status before every trip.
Best time: June–September for lilies and green; October–November for clear views and gold grass. Check current access status with us before planning.
