Phek District: Kapamodzu, Pfutsero and Zhavame
Phek is Nagaland’s southern highland district: the tabletop of Kapamodzu, the flower village of Zhavame and Pfutsero, one of the coldest towns in the state. Most visitors see it as a peak; it is actually a three-stop circuit.
The three stops
- Kapamodzu Peak: the 2,620m tabletop, cosmos fields in October-November, wooden cabins and the 360 ridge.
- Zhavame: the Pochury base village of flower slopes and festival hospitality (Dec 3–4 in the 2026 calendar).
- Pfutsero: the high Chakhesang town at about 2,100m, Glory Peak sunrises and kiwi orchards; the sensible overnight base.
Add the Mosen viewpoint above Kigwema and the district writes its own itinerary. Our Kapamodzu + Mosen + Kisama trip runs the whole line September to December (package PDF).
People and festivals
Phek is shared by Chakhesang country in the west (Phek town, Chozuba) and Pochury villages in the east around Zhavame. Chakhesang festival seasons fall in the April-May window; the December Kapamodzu-Zhavame festival brings the ridge camp. The tribe festival calendar places them all.
Getting there and around
From Kohima about 135km to Phek town, about 120km to Pfutsero by the southern highway; from Dimapur, add the 74km climb to Kohima first. Kohima route, Dimapur route. Sumos and shared taxis run the highway legs; the Zhavame road wants a local vehicle.
