Kohima travel guide, how many days, where to stay

Quick answer: Kohima, Nagaland’s hill capital (~1,400m), is your base for the Hornbill Festival at Kisama 12km south. Give it 2–3 days (December) or 1–2 days (off-season) plus day trips, Khonoma 20km, Dzükou trailheads, the WWII cemetery and the Bara Bazaar in town. Reach it from Dimapur (74km, ~3h by shared taxi or cab); Guwahati is a full day’s drive (~340km).

How many days do you need in Kohima?

  • Festival week: 2–3 nights, one full Kisama day, one market/cemetery day, one Khonoma afternoon. Our 3D/2N package is built exactly on this.
  • Off-season: 1–2 nights is enough for town; the real time goes to the villages around it.

Where to stay

Festival week, Kohima’s hotels sell out and prices spike, most visitors are happier at our campsite near Kisama (tents, blankets, bonfire, 10 minutes from the grounds; included in every package). In town, everything from budget hotels to a couple of heritage properties exists, but book early. Full comparison in where to stay at Hornbill.

Getting in and out

  • From Dimapur (airport + railhead): shared Sumos leave through the day, ~3h up the hill; private cabs take 2.5h. This is the standard entry. See how to reach.
  • From Guwahati: ~340km, 8–10 hours with breaks, a full day’s drive through Assam tea country and into the hills. Possible in one push, better split.
  • Kohima → Shillong: a very long day (~10–11h via Dimapur and Nongstoin-side roads); possible with an early start and one driver who doesn’t stop, but overnighting in Silchar-side or splitting via Haflong is saner. Possible? Yes. Recommended as one day? Only if you love driving.
  • Kohima → Imphal (Manipur): ~4–5 hours on the hills road, the easiest cross-state hop, subject to current Manipur advisories.

In and around town

  • Kohima War Cemetery, the 1944 battle on the ridge where the town stands; the tennis-court lawn is one of India’s most moving war memorials.
  • Bara Bazaar, one of the Northeast’s oldest markets; dried fish, axone, hornbill motifs, hill produce.
  • Kisama, festival venue in December, open heritage village of morungs year-round.
  • Khonoma, 20km, Asia’s first green village; see our village guide.
  • Dzükou Valley, the trek starts a short drive from Kohima; the classic add-on. Trek guide here.

Local transport

In town, shared cabs and autos cover the short distances cheaply. For Kisama in festival week, shared taxis run constantly from Kohima. For anything outside the Kohima–Kisama–Khonoma triangle, hire a cab for the day or take a package with transport included, that’s what we do (from ₹3,999).

When to come

December 1–10 is the city’s peak, festival, concerts, carnival, cold nights, full hotels. Otherwise October–November (post-monsoon green, Dzükou open) and February–May are the quiet, good months. Message us on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you honestly what your dates allow.
