Khonoma and Tuophema, Nagaland's community tourism villages, explained
Quick answer: Khonoma (20km from Kohima) is Asia’s first green village, terraced fields, a hunting-to-conservation story, and homestays in Angami houses. Tuophema (about 40 minutes the other side of Kohima) runs on community tourism: a village-run tourist compound, cultural evenings and honest Naga food. Both are easy day trips from Kohima; one night in either is the version you’ll remember.
Khonoma, the green village
Khonoma’s claim to fame: the Angami village that gave up hunting to protect its forests, the tragopan and its hills are community-conserved. Walk the terraces, visit the fort ruins, and talk to anyone over fifty. Homestays are simple, clean, and booked through the village tourism council; food is village-kitchen Naga. One afternoon + one morning is the minimum honest visit.

Tuophema, the community experiment
Tuophema was set up as community-based tourism decades before it was fashionable: the village runs the tourism operation itself, a cluster of traditional huts as guest rooms, a morung-style dining hall, rice-beer and cultural programmes on request. It is less spectacular than Khonoma and more curated: a good place to stay rather than to see. Book through the village committee (or ask us); October brings its own mini-festival season.
How to fit them into a trip
- Hornbill week: do Kisama in the days, and put your free afternoon or the last morning into Khonoma, it is on the Kohima side of the festival road. Our Hornbill & Khonoma circuits include it.
- Off-season: one night Khonoma + one night Tuophema makes a perfect slow weekend from Kohima.
- Time: Khonoma deserves the half-day; Tuophema deserves the evening (the rice beer and the stories come out after dark).
Practical notes
Both villages are at Kohima altitude, carry the warm layer. Homestay bathrooms are basic; power cuts happen. Carry cash; UPI reaches even here but slowly. And go with respect: these are working villages, not shows, ask before photographs, buy the weaves at the cooperative, not from the cheapest stall.
