Is Nagaland Part of India? History
Yes, Nagaland is part of India. It became the 16th state on December 1, 1963, the first state created purely from a hill territory. Before that it was the Naga Hills district of Assam; before independence, loosely administered hills under British control with large unadministered areas toward Myanmar.
The short history
The British annexed the Naga Hills piecemeal through the 1800s. After 1947 the question of Naga membership in India turned into a long insurgency; the statehood compromise of 1963, and the 1975 Shillong Accord after it, brought most fighting to an end over decades. The political conversation continues today, but constitutionally Nagaland has been a full Indian state for over sixty years.
What makes Nagaland different inside India
Article 371A protects Naga customary law, land ownership and social practices from most Acts of Parliament; no other state has quite this arrangement. We explain it plainly in the Article 371A guide. Practically: tribal land cannot be bought by outsiders, village councils hold real power, and customary courts operate beside state courts.
Borders and geography
Nagaland borders Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to the west and north, and Myanmar along its entire east, one reason the eastern districts feel so remote. The borders explainer maps every neighbour.
What it means for travellers
You travel domestically: Indian networks, the rupee, domestic flights into Dimapur. You need an ILP (waived during Hornbill week), and you feel the difference in every village square, festival and kitchen.
