The Apatani People of Ziro: Culture, Land and Festivals

By Mapping Memories · Updated 2026-10-05

A high Arunachal valley, representative of the Ziro plateau

The Apatani are the people of the Ziro valley in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Subansiri district: farmers of astonishing precision who turned a mountain plateau into permanent wet-rice fields without either terracing the slopes or draining them. Around their agriculture grew one of the region’s most studied cultures, and around their festival calendar grows Ziro’s travel fame.

The land engineers

Apatani fields are flat platform plots irrigated by a valley-wide channel network, with fish reared in the paddies and millet grown on the bunds. Land, in the Apatani system, is managed for the community’s future, which is why the plateau looks the way it has for centuries. Villages like Hari and Bulla keep the classic form: dense wooden houses, grid lanes, community shrines at the edges. Ziro sits at about 1,500-1,700m, cool year-round.

The tattoos, said with care

Older Apatani women carried the famous facial tattoos and nose plugs (yaping hullo), a tradition that ended in the 1970s. Treat it as history told by the women themselves, not a photo opportunity: always ask, always accept no.

Festivals and the calendar

Myoko (March) is the great Apatani festival, weeks of village purification, rituals and community feasting hosted by the priest-clans. Dree (July 5) is the agricultural festival the whole valley keeps, praying over the staples. The Ziro Music Festival (September) sits beside this tradition rather than inside it; see the Ziro guide for that side.

Visiting Ziro

Permits first: Arunachal’s ILP, online in advance (permit guide). Stay in Apatani family homestays around Hapoli or Old Ziro; walk Hari and Bulla with a local guide; time the visit for Myoko if March is on your side.
