Yumthang is the broad glacial valley at about 11,800ft inside the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary: in May the slopes carry dozens of rhododendron species in bloom, and the river braids silver through the meadow floor. Snow walls line the road well into spring.
Best time: April-May for blooms; Oct-Nov for clear skies.
Practicals
Permits & season for Sikkim
No ILP, but protected areas (Nathula, North Sikkim beyond Mangan) need permits arranged through registered agencies ahead of travel.
March to May for rhododendrons and clear skies, October to December for the sharpest views; the monsoon closes high routes.
