How to Reach Gangtok: Flight, Train and Road, Compared
Gangtok has no airport station of its own in practice: you either fly to Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal and drive 4-5 hours, or take a train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and do the same road. Pakyong (PKG), Sikkim’s own airport 30km away, runs limited flights that weather cancels often; Bagdogra remains the reliable plan.
By flight
- Bagdogra (IXB): the workhorse. Metro flights daily, then taxi or shared cab to Gangtok, 120km, 4-5 hours on the Teesta road.
- Pakyong (PKG): closer, dramatic approach, thin schedule and fog cancellations. Book morning slots if at all.
- From Bagdokra, pre-booked private taxis cost more, shared Sumos from Siliguri’s Deorali stand cost least. We arrange both, message us.
By train
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the railhead for all of Sikkim, with long-distance trains from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati. From NJP, the same 4-5 hour road. The Northeast by train and bus guide covers the wider rail net.
By road
From Siliguri via Sevoke and the Teesta canyon, or the longer Kalimpong route. From Darjeeling, 4 hours across the ridge. Shared jeeps leave from Siliguri through the morning.
Permits on arrival
Indians need nothing for Gangtok town; East Sikkim (Nathula, Zuluk) needs a permit arranged in Gangtok with ID photos, and foreigners cannot go beyond certain points. The full matrix lives in the Sikkim permit guide and our permits hub.
