Sikkim permits & open status, North Sikkim, Nathula, Gurudon

By Mapping Memories · Updated 2026-09-24

A high mountain pass in the Eastern Himalayas

Quick answer: Sikkim is the Northeast’s most-visited state, and its biggest travel question is always the same: “is ___ open?” The stable rules: most of South/West Sikkim (Pelling, Ravangla, Namchi) needs no special permits. North Sikkim (Lachung, Lachen, Yumthang, Zero Point, Gurudongmar) and Nathula need protected-area permits issued only through registered local operators, foreign nationals face extra restrictions on several of these. High routes close intermittently in winter and reopen with weather. Verify status the week you travel; treat any fixed “open/closed” answer older than a week as stale.

North Sikkim (the two-valley trip)

  • The Lachung side: Yumthang Valley (the rhododendron flowering valley, Feb–June bloom) and Zero Point further up.
  • The Lachen side: Gurudongmar Lake (~17,800ft / 5,430m per the Sikkim government, one of India’s highest lakes), dawn starts, army checkposts, real altitude rules (heart/lung conditions: ask your doctor).
  • Permits: Protected Area Permits arranged by registered tour operators only, DIY applications don’t exist for these routes. Minimum group rules and vehicle rules (local registered vehicles only) apply.
  • Foreign nationals: historically restricted on several North Sikkim and Nathula routes, with permissions opening and tightening over the years, verify current foreigner rules with the operator before booking, and keep a plan-B day.

East Sikkim: Nathula + Tsomgo + the Silk Route

  • Nathula Pass (India–China border trade post) and Tsomgo Lake: permits via registered operators, day trips from Gangtok; winter closes both intermittently.
  • Zuluk and the Old Silk Route loop: the famous 95-hairpin road; permits + local vehicles through Rongli-side operators; open most of the year except monsoon washouts and heavy winter.

South & West Sikkim: the no-permit half

Pelling (Kanchenjunga’s postcard view), Ravangla’s Buddha Park and Namchi’s Char Dham, none of these need special permits, all are reachable by regular vehicles, and they make excellent low-friction trips paired with Darjeeling. Gangtok connects: Bagdogra airport / NJP railhead → Gangtok ~4h by reserved cab; shared Sumos and helicopters exist for the impatient.

The verification habit

North Sikkim’s open-status is a weather+administrative story that changes weekly. Our rule for travellers: fix your dates, then ask an on-ground operator (that’s us) for the current status 7–10 days before travel, not before that, because any answer older is noise. We arrange Sikkim legs as custom itineraries with registered operator partners: WhatsApp us.
