Japfü is the big peak behind Kohima at about 3,000m: the day-climb through mossy rhododendron forest to the ridge, with views down to the capital and across to Dzükou’s valleys. The famous Dzükou trek crosses its shoulder from the Viswema side.

It is a long, steep day: start pre-dawn, carry water, and turn around if the weather turns.

Permits & season

ILP required for Indian nationals outside the Hornbill window (waived Dec 1–10 with photo ID), online at ilp.nagaland.gov.in; foreign nationals pay a fee.

October to March is the clean window; December adds the Hornbill Festival, and the monsoon makes eastern roads slow.
