Ziro is the Apatani homeland in Lower Subansiri: flat-rimmed rice terraces worked with remarkable engineering, villages of bamboo-and-wood houses, and a tribal culture (fish-in-paddy farming, facial tattoos among elder women) that UNESCO has placed on India’s tentative World Heritage list.
In late September the Ziro Festival of Music stages four days of indie and folk on outdoor stages in the fields. Dree, the Apatani festival, runs in early July.
