Tripura travel guide, Agartala, Unakoti, Neermahal and the Jampui Hills
Quick answer: Tripura is the Northeast’s most overlooked state, and the easiest to add on: no permits, an airport in Agartala with Kolkata connections, a royal palace-museum, one of India’s great archaeological wonders at Unakoti, a lake palace at Neermahal, and the orange orchards of the Jampui Hills. 4–5 days covers the state comfortably.
The circuit
- Agartala (1–2 days): the Ujjayanta Palace, the former royal palace turned state museum, set in Mughal-style gardens, plus the temple circuit (Tripura Sundari at Udaipur is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas).
- Unakoti (day trip, ~3h): “one less than a crore” gods, colossal rock-cut faces carved into a forested gorge sometime between the 7th–9th centuries. It rivals any heritage site in India and sees a fraction of its visitors. Go early; the mist in the gorge is part of it.
- Neermahal (day trip, ~1.5h): India’s largest water palace, built mid-lake (Rudrasagar) by the Manikya kings, boat up to it.
- Jampui Hills (2 days): the orange orchard hills on the Mizoram border, cool air, sunset points over Bangladesh’s plain, and the state’s gentlest homestays.
Practicalities
No ILP, no PAP, Tripura is open to all Indian citizens, and foreign tourists with a regular India visa (permit explainer). Agartala connects via Kolkata/Guwahati; the state runs on shared cabs (Unakoti from Kailasahar side, Neermahal from Udaipur side). Season: October–March; Jampui’s orange season peaks November.
