Is Mizoram worth visiting?

For the right traveller, emphatically. It is not a sights-state; it’s a people-and-ridges state: dawn fog filling valleys, chapels on every hill, the cleanest villages you’ll see in India, and Mizo hospitality that runs on choir practice and strong tea. If your travel taste runs to markets, walks and quiet, this is your state.

Getting in

• Fly: Lengpui Airport (Aizawl) connects via Kolkata/Guwahati.
• Overland: Silchar (Assam) → Aizawl by road (~5–6h), a beautiful ridge drive.
• Permit: ILP for Indian nationals (online/temporary passes at entry points); PAP for foreigners. Rules have eased in recent years but verify current status before travel (permits explainer).

The circuit

• Aizawl (2 days): the ridgeline capital, Millenium Centre’s view decks, Bara Bazar, the Sunday church choirs (attend one; it’s the state’s real music festival), Durtlang hills.
• Reiek (day trip): a heritage village on a peak an hour out, traditional Mizo houses rebuilt as a village resort, plus Reiek Tlang’s cliff walk.
• Hmuifang (overnight option): a grassy mountaintop 50km south, community festival ground, homestays in the mist.
• Vantawng Falls + Thenzawl (day loop): Mizoram’s tallest waterfall and the weaving town where the famous puan fabrics come off handlooms.

Practical notes
