Tawang in January: snow season
Tawang in January is full winter: Sela Pass under snow, lakes frozen white, and the monastery at its most atmospheric with prayer flags stiff in the cold. It is the most demanding and most rewarded month to visit: fewer tourists, dramatic light, and roads that demand respect.
What January feels like
- Days: 5-10C in sun, sharp and still.
- Nights: well below freezing; hotels run heaters in the better rooms.
- Sela: snow-clearing happens, but closures of hours to days are normal.
