Sivasagar travel guide, the Ahom capital
Quick answer: Sivasagar, the Ahom kingdom’s capital for six centuries, is one day of monuments (Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar, Kareng Ghar, Sivadol) and the classic pairing partner for Majuli (2–3 hours to the ferry). It’s the history half of an Assam trip that otherwise runs on wildlife and river islands.
What you’re seeing
- Rang Ghar, Asia’s oldest surviving amphitheatre (1746), the Ahom royal sports pavilion shaped like an inverted boat.
- Talatal Ghar, the “underground palace” of Rangpur: multiple floors, secret tunnels (closed to public, stories intact).
- Kareng Ghar (Garhgaon), the Ahom kings’ actual palace, a short drive out.
- Sivadol, one of India’s tallest Shiva temples, on the Borpukhuri tank in town.
- Charaideo maidams, the Ahom royal burial mounds ~30km out; recently inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the “pyramids of Assam”, and the single best half-day from Sivasagar town.
How many days and how to reach
One full day covers the town monuments + Charaideo. Reach: Jorhat is ~1.5h (and your Majuli gateway); Dibrugarh ~2h; both have airports and rail links. Buses and cabs run constantly on this Assam corridor.
The pairing that works
Sivasagar → Majuli is the smart sequence: monuments one day, then Nimati Ghat ferry to the river island the next (Majuli ferry guide). Add Kaziranga before Sivasagar for the full Assam triangle: wildlife → history → river island. All three connect on the Jorhat axis without backtracking.
Best season: November–March (the maidams and tanks in winter light, ferries calm). Carry cash for the smaller monuments; guides are informal and worth it, the Ahom stories are the entire experience. Custom Assam legs around our Nagaland packages, WhatsApp us.
