The ferry, plainly

Nimati Ghat (Jorhat) → Kamalabari Ghat (Majuli): ferries run through daylight hours, roughly hourly in season, shared with motorbikes, cycles and the occasional car.
Timings shift with the river, water level moves landings and schedules, especially monsoon. Arrive with slack; ask the ghat for the day’s last return.
Car on the ferry: possible (toll + booking at the ghat), but on an island of sand tracks and village lanes, a rented cycle/scooter beats it for everything except luggage.
Alternate access exists from the north bank (Lakhimpur/Dibrugarh side) when Nimati-side conditions misbehave, one more reason to confirm timings locally.

What Majuli is

A shifting island of satras, Neo-Vaishnavite monasteries founded since the 15th century, where monks perform dance-dramas, Samaguri Satra’s monks make the famous mukha (masks), Mishing tribal villages sit on stilts over rice fields, and the Brahmaputra’s embankment sunsets end every day.
