How the Hornbill helps Nagaland’s local economy

By Mapping Memories · Updated 2026-09-27

Naga dancers performing at the Hornbill Festival

The Hornbill Festival helps Nagaland tourism by concentrating ten days of visitor demand into Kisama and Kohima every December, filling homestays and hotels, selling crafts and food directly from villages, and giving every tribe a stage that turns culture into livelihood. It is the state’s single biggest tourism event, and it anchors the travel year for the whole hill state.

Where the impact actually lands

Homestays and village incomes. Festival week fills Kohima’s hotels first, then the villages: Khonoma, Tuophema, Kigwema and Jakhama take overflow guests at homestay rates, and families earn in ten days what months of farming may not bring.

Craft and food sales, direct. The morungs and stalls are village-run: shawls, woodwork and food are sold by the makers, not through middlemen. For craft families, the festival is the year’s main retail window.

The tribes get a stage. Every recognised Naga community performs at Kisama, which keeps songs, dances and dress traditions economically worth teaching to the next generation.

The halo effect. Visitors come for Hornbill and return for what they discover: Dzükou treks in October, Sekrenyi in February, the falcon season at Wokha. The festival is the funnel; the state’s wider tourism is the pipe. See the festivals calendar for the year it creates.

What it means for travellers

Book early (stays sell out weeks ahead), spend inside morungs and stalls rather than only at big hotels, and treat the festival as a doorway: our packages build the week so your money reaches villages, not just venues.
