Quick answer: Yes, families and elders do the Hornbill Festival every year, and Kisama is manageable, IF you plan around three things: the cold, the walking, and the crowds of the opening weekend. Pick mid-week days (Dec 2–5), stay close to the grounds (village homestay or our camp), and go in the morning session when the arena is calmest.
The three real constraints
- Cold: 4–8°C mornings, colder for small kids and elders. Layers, caps, gloves; elders get a hot-water bag for camp nights. See the December weather guide.
- Walking: the grounds are spread out and slopes are real. Strollers work on the main paths (wide, firm) but struggle on grass slopes, baby-carriers beat strollers for toddlers. Wheelchairs are manageable on the main arena concourse with a companion.
- Crowds: opening day (Dec 1) and the final weekend are the crush. Mid-week mornings are gentle; by 1pm the tour vans arrive.
Facilities on the grounds
Toilets exist across Kisama (paid community toilets and festival blocks, carry small change and tissues). Drinking water stalls are around; bring your own bottle to refill. Food stalls everywhere, kids survive on momos and biscuits if nothing else appeals. A first-aid station and medical team operate at the venue through the festival; for anything serious, Kohima’s hospitals are 30–40 minutes away. Keep your IDs and our WhatsApp number on you.
Pacing that works with kids and elders
- One arena session a day (10am–1pm), then home for lunch and naps. The evening carnival is optional magic, not homework.
- Stay close: a Kisama-side camp or Kigwema homestay means nap-and-return is possible. Kohima hotel = a 40-minute commute each way, twice a day.
- Build a rest day between festival days, Khonoma’s slow village morning is the perfect breather.
