Hornbill Festival weather in December, how cold does Nagaland get?

Quick answer: Hornbill Festival weather is dry and sunny by day, properly cold by night. Kisama sits at ~1,400m near Kohima: expect daytimes around 15–21°C in the sun, and nights dropping to 4–8°C, colder in the last festival week, coldest in the camps. Rain is unlikely; pack layers, not umbrellas.

A day’s weather at the festival

• Morning (7–10am): the cold gets underestimated. The arena sits in a valley bowl; early sessions mean 5–10°C with long shadows. A proper jacket, not a hoodie.
• Midday (11am–3pm): the reward, strong hill sun, warm enough for a t-shirt in the stands. This is when the main performances happen.
• Evening (after 5pm): the temperature falls off a cliff as soon as the sun dips behind the ridgelines. The night carnival in Kohima runs close to single digits most nights.

What to pack (December, tested on our own camps)

1. Layers, t-shirt + fleece + shell jacket. Peel and stack through the day.
2. Warm cap and socks, for the camps and carnival nights; half your cold comes from your head and feet.
3. Sunscreen and sunglasses, 1,400m sun is honest even in December.
4. Thermals if you feel the cold, camp nights are the coldest hours of the trip.
5. Lip balm and moisturiser, the mountain air is dry.

We camp our guests in proper tents with thick blankets, warm at night, ten minutes from the grounds. That is deliberate: hotels in Kohima mean late-night driving after the carnival, and the camp is the better half of the festival experience anyway.

Does it rain?

December is Nagaland’s driest month, rain is rare enough to be an event. The exceptions are early mornings of fog and mist in the valley, which are gorgeous over the arena and a photography gift. Roads stay dry; the drive from Dimapur is rarely affected.

One correction to expectations

Cold changes behaviour: the arena fills later in the morning, the morungs do brisk tea business, and everyone clusters around fires after dark.
