Dirang in December: cold valley mornings

By Mapping Memories · Updated 2026-09-30

Camps on a cold Himalayan hillside, representative of Dirang winters

Dirang in December is a cold apple valley: frost on the dzong’s stone, steam off the hot springs, and black-necked cranes arriving in nearby Sangti. It is the classic stop on the Guwahati to Tawang road, and winter makes it quietly spectacular.

What December feels like

  • Dawns: 2-8C in the valley, colder with wind.
  • Days: 12-16C, bright, dry.
  • Nights: near freezing, real winter packing.

How to plan it

One relaxed day covers Dirang Dzong, the monastery above town and the hot springs; add a morning in Sangti Valley for the cranes, which winter here in small numbers. ILP applies to Arunachal, sort it online in advance via the permit guide. December also means Sela Pass runs snow-risk: keep a buffer day for the Tawang leg.
