Dimapur to Kohima for Hornbill, Sumo, taxi, bus or flight? The full transport guide
Quick answer: Fly or train to Dimapur, then 74km / ~3 hours to Kohima by shared Sumo (cheap) or private cab (fast). From Kohima, festival shuttles and shared taxis cover the 12km to Kisama constantly. Driving your own car? Park at the Kigwema festival parking, private vehicles don’t enter Kisama on festival days. Dimapur → Kohima: the three ways
- Shared Sumo (the default): run all day from the railway station and taxi stands, ~3 hours, seat-share pricing, a few hundred rupees. They leave when full; mornings move fastest.
- Private cab: ~2.5 hours, door-to-door, priced per vehicle, worth it for families, late arrivals or 3+ people splitting.
- Bus: Nagaland State Transport buses run the route; slowest but cheapest. Fine with a big time buffer.
Flight vs train to Dimapur
- Fly: Delhi and Kolkata have direct connections to Dimapur; most other cities route via Guwahati/Kolkata. Book early for December, festival-week fares spike.
- Train: Dimapur sits on the Guwahati–Dibrugarh line; overnight trains from Guwahati (~8–10h) and Kolkata (~24h+) work fine and are the budget pick. Is the Guwahati–Dimapur train reliable? Mostly yes, but book beds early in festival season.
Night arrivals, the real question
Late flight into Dimapur? Shared Sumos thin out after dark; pre-arranged pickup is the safe answer (we do airport/station pickups for package guests). If you’re independent: the station taxi stand has night cabs at a premium, or sleep near the station and take the first morning Sumo, honestly not a bad plan.
Kohima → Kisama (the last 12km)

Driving your own car
You can drive to the festival, but private vehicles stop at the designated parking near Kigwema; the last stretch to Kisama is walk or shuttle on festival days. Kigwema parking is the arranged, safer option (highway-side parking risks towing). The roads themselves: Dimapur–Kohima is fine for confident drivers; Kohima–Kisama during festival hours is slow and congested, go early morning. Coming from far (Bangalore, Delhi)? Fly to Dimapur and rent/hire locally, the multi-state drive is a trip of its own, not a commute.
Bikes and scooters
Bike rentals in Kohima/Dimapur exist but sell out for festival week, book weeks ahead. Riding Dimapur→Kohima is common among bikers; solo riding at night on these roads isn’t recommended for visitors. Honest answer for most travellers: the Sumo IS the local transport culture here.
