Walk under
Dehing Patkai in January
Upper Assam’s rainforest, coal towns and the old war road.
Quick answer. Winter. Cool, dry and clear across the Brahmaputra valley, this is peak wildlife season. For Dehing Patkai specifically, January is inside the short good window, so lock stays early.

Why January here
A large lowland rainforest patch near the Myanmar border, with elephants, hornbills and the heritage of Margherita and Ledo.
Dehing Patkai is the rainforest belt of Upper Assam, a landscape of evergreen forest, coal-town heritage and the old Ledo-Stilwell road to Myanmar. Elephants and hornbills move through it; the Jeypore forest block is the classic birding walk.
Wildlife this month: Kaziranga and Manas are open and at their best: grass is short and sightings are easiest.
