Umiam (Barapani) is the big reservoir every traveller crosses on the way up to Shillong: viewpoints along the road, boating and kayaking from the resort side, and mist that turns the whole basin cinematic early in the morning.
Best time: October to April.

October to May works; the monsoon is the point in Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, and the fiercest anywhere in India.
