Mokokchung is the Ao Naga heartland, often called the cultural capital of the state: the hill town itself, and villages like Ungma (among the oldest Ao settlements) and Mopungchuket with its log drum and love-legend sites.

Moatsu, the Ao festival, runs the first week of May; Tsungremong follows in August. The easier gateway is Jorhat in Assam, about 4-5 hours away.

Permits & season

ILP required for Indian nationals outside the Hornbill window (waived Dec 1–10 with photo ID), online at ilp.nagaland.gov.in; foreign nationals pay a fee.

October to March is the clean window; December adds the Hornbill Festival, and the monsoon makes eastern roads slow.
