Northeast India packing list, winter, monsoon and the honest everyday kit

Quick answer: Pack for layers, cash and patchy networks. The everyday kit works everywhere; add thermals and a real jacket for hill winters (Kohima, Tawang, Sela); add quick-dry everything and a rain shell for monsoon. Full season specifics below, this is the list we send our own guests.

The everyday kit (any season)

Broken-in walking shoes, the Northeast is walked, not driven past
Light layers (t-shirt + shirt + light fleece covers most days)
Rain shell even in dry months (mountain showers appear from nowhere)
Power bank + torch (outages are normal)
Cash in notes, UPI dies past the last town
ID originals + 2 photocopies (permits, checkposts)
Basic meds, sunscreen, lip balm, insect repellent
A daypack for treks and market runs

Winter additions (Nov–February, hills above 1,000m)

Thermals (top + bottom), Kohima/Dzükou/Tawang nights hit 0–8°C; passes go sub-zero
Fleece + insulated jacket; warm cap, gloves, proper socks
Lip balm and moisturiser, the dry mountain air cracks skin fast
Sunglasses, high-altitude sun is honest even in December
If camping: extra warm layer + the thickest socks you own (Dzükou camp reality)

Monsoon additions (June–September)

Quick-dry clothing (cotton never dries)
Rain shell + dry bags for electronics; a phone pouch
Sandals/slides for wet feet evenings; leech socks for forest walks
Ziplock bags, your documents’ best friends

Festival week (Hornbill, Dec 1–10)

What everyone forgets

Spare glasses/contacts, replacements don’t exist in the hills
Charging cables, homestays never have spares
A pen, permits, checkposts and hotel registers are paper
