Northeast India in December, what's actually good, and what to skip
Quick answer: December is the Northeast’s showcase month, because of the Hornbill Festival (Dec 1–10, Nagaland). Around it: Kaziranga opens its safari season, Meghalaya is dry and cool, and Tawang is open but weather-gated by Sela Pass. The honest plan: anchor on Hornbill week, add one state around it, and don’t try to cover the whole region in one December.
Why December works
- Hornbill Festival, all sixteen-plus Naga tribes, one arena, every evening a carnival. It is the single best-organised week in the region (packages from ₹3,999).
- Kaziranga (Assam), the park reopens around November and December is prime rhino-sighting weather.
- Meghalaya, the monsoon has gone, waterfalls are modest but the root bridges and Dawki’s clear-water season begin.
- Weather everywhere, dry, crisp, cold at night. Pack for 4–8°C in the hills, sub-zero on the passes.
December state by state
- Nagaland: peak. Hornbill + Dzükou treks run from our Kisama camp. Book 4–6 weeks out.
- Arunachal (Tawang): open, snow-dusted, and Sela Pass is the gamble, December mostly succeeds, January–February is the risky window (winter guide). Buffer day mandatory.
- Meghalaya: excellent, Sohra, Nongriat, Dawki without the rain.
- Assam: safari season + Majuli’s ferry life in cool air.
- Sikkim: North Sikkim’s high lakes freeze and routes close intermittently; Gangtok-side December is fine.
- Manipur/Mizoram/Tripura: dry season, thin tourist infrastructure, fine if you have a reason to go, skip if you’re checklist-travelling.
The two December patterns that work
- The classic: Guwahati in → Hornbill week (package) → Kaziranga or Meghalaya leg → out. 8–10 days.

What to skip in December
Trying all seven states. Distances are lying, 200km of hill road is a day. Two anchors (Hornbill + one) is a great trip; three is a bus route. And skip rigid itineraries: December weather above 3,000m rewrites plans; keep one slack day per mountain leg.
