Nongkhnum Island and Mawsynram, Meghalaya's river island and the wettest place

Quick answer: Two of Meghalaya’s strangest superlatives, both easy add-ons to a Sohra trip: Nongkhnum, India’s second-largest river island, a sand-and-grass plain mid-river with a waterfall edge, and Mawsynram, statistically the wettest inhabited place on earth, an hour from Shillong. Nongkhnum Island

From Nongstoin (West Khasi Hills, ~3h from Shillong), a boat hops you to Nongkhnum: a huge sandy-grassy island mid-river, with waterfall staircases nearby and sunset points that feel like a beach without a sea. Camping and simple stays exist; the island is quiet enough to hear the water wrap around you. October–February is the window, monsoon floods the island’s edges and the boats stop negotiating.

Mawsynram

An hour from Shillong, Mawsynram holds the rainfall record that Sohra (Cherrapunji) trades with it. In monsoon it is a force of nature, rain like weather you’ve never met, waterfalls appearing on cliffs that were dry in April. In the dry months it’s a quiet village with the giant umbrella-shaped rock and the Mawjymbuin cave with its Shiva-lingam formation.

When to go: if you want to feel the wettest place, come June–August prepared for weather that eats umbrellas. If you want to see comfortably, come in the dry season and accept it as a pretty village. The monsoon version is the famous one, see Meghalaya in monsoon.

Worth it?

• Nongkhnum: yes, if you’re doing a full Meghalaya week and want the least-crowded night of it. Combine with Nongstoin’s markets.
• Mawsynram: yes, as a half-day from Shillong in any season, the cave and the rain-story alone earn it.
