Nagaland Inner Line Permit — the simple version

The Inner Line Permit (ILP) is the paperwork that guards Nagaland’s border. It is simpler than it sounds, and it is the one thing you cannot skip.

What it is

An ILP is a travel document Indian nationals need to enter Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. It exists to protect indigenous communities and their land — it dates back to colonial-era Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, and the Northeast still runs on it.

Who needs what

• Indian nationals: ILP required for Nagaland. Apply online through the Nagaland government’s official ILP portal, or let us handle it.
• Foreign nationals: no ILP, but registration formalities apply on entry. We walk booked travellers through the current process.

What you need to apply

Keep these ready and the form takes minutes: a government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID), a passport-size photo, and your travel dates. Approvals are usually quick, but apply days ahead, not the night before your flight.

What it costs in practice

The permit fee itself is small. The real cost of getting it wrong is at the border checkpoint between Assam and Nagaland, where travel without a permit stops until it is fixed.
