How Many States in North East India? The Honest Count
North East India has 8 states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. Seven of them are the famous seven sisters; Sikkim became the eighth when it joined the North Eastern Council in 2002, which is why older books still say seven.
The eight states, with capitals
| State | Capital | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Arunachal Pradesh | Itanagar | Tawang, Sela Pass, Mechuka |
| Assam | Dispur (Guwahati) | Kaziranga, Majuli, tea |
| Manipur | Imphal | Loktak Lake, sangai deer |
| Meghalaya | Shillong | Cherrapunji, root bridges |
| Mizoram | Aizawl | Hill ranges, calm |
| Nagaland | Kohima | Hornbill Festival, tribes |
| Sikkim | Gangtok | Kanchenjunga, monasteries |
| Tripura | Agartala | Ujjayanta, Unakoti |
Why the confusion exists
Until 2002 the North Eastern Council had seven members. Sikkim’s addition made eight, but the “seven sisters” nickname never updated. Some lists also exclude Sikkim for geography: it borders the sisters only narrowly and connects to the rest of India through West Bengal.
Days each state deserves
Rough, honest numbers: Meghalaya 4-5 days, Sikkim 5-6, Assam 4-6, Nagaland 4-5 (December for Hornbill), Arunachal 6-8 (distances are real), Mizoram 4, Tripura 3, Manipur 4 status-checked. The first-timer matrix breaks it down by interest.
