What to wear at the Hornbill Festival, dress code

By Mapping Memories · Updated 2026-09-24

Naga dancers in traditional dress at Kisama

Quick answer: There is no dress code for visitors, wear what keeps you warm and moving. The formula that works: layers + comfortable shoes + a warm cap. Days swing from cold mornings to warm sun to freezing carnival nights; you’ll re-dress three times a day. Traditional dress is for the performers, not visitors, admiring it (and buying weaves) is the respectful part.

The layering formula (December reality)

  • Morning (5–10°C): t-shirt + fleece + shell jacket, cap on.
  • Midday (warm sun): down to a t-shirt, the arena sun at 1,400m is strong.
  • Evening (carnival/concerts): everything back on, plus gloves if your hands quit early.

That’s three wardrobe states a day, pack pieces that stack, not outfits. Full kit in the packing list.

Footwear

The Kisama grounds are grass, gravel and slopes; the carnival is pavement. Comfortable closed shoes with grip, not brand-new, not sandals. You’ll walk more than you planned; everyone does.

Can visitors wear traditional Naga dress?

It’s welcomed when done right, many visitors drape a Naga shawl (buy one at the craft stalls; wearing it supports the weavers). What to avoid: costume-y half-traditional looks for photos, touching headdresses and regalia, and posing in ceremonial items that aren’t for sale. Performers in full dress are working, not props, ask, then photograph.

The cultural quick-rules

  • Churches are everywhere and dress there runs modest, cover shoulders/knees if you attend a service (many visitors do; the carols are something else).
  • Ask before portraits, especially elders and performers mid-ritual (photography guide).
  • Drinking is carnival-normal; public rowdiness is not the look, and the local crowd will let you know.

One bag truth

Whatever you wear by day, the night needs the warm layer ON, carnival hours are when people underestimate Kisama’s December. Layer up by 5pm and enjoy the night carnival like a local. Dates → WhatsApp us.
