Haflong guide: Meghalaya's hill-station vibe, inside Assam
Quick answer: Haflong, Assam’s only hill station, in the Barail range of Dima Hasao, is the region’s quietest hill escape: a lake town at ~700m, wrapped in blue hills, reachable by train all the way up (thehill-section railway via New Haflong is a classic). Pair it with Umrangso’s reservoir and Maibong’s ruined Kachari kingdom. 2–3 days is the full visit; it’s the anti-crowd answer to Shillong.
What you’re coming for
- Haflong Lake and the ridge walks around town, evenings here are embarrassingly peaceful.
- Jatinga, the village famous for its “bird suicides” phenomenon (migratory birds disoriented by fog and lights on ridgelines, October–February nights); the mystery is mostly explained now, the eerie valley visit remains.
- Maibong, ruins of the 16th-century Kachari capital, stone monoliths and a river running past the old city.
- Umrangso, the reservoir town on the Kopili river, an hour-plus further; boat water, hill silence.
How to reach
The special thing: the railway climbs into the hills, broad-gauge trains run Silchar/Guwahati side up to New Haflong through tunnels and loops (one of India’s scenic hill sections). By road: Silchar ~2–3h, Guwahati ~5–6h. Local sumos connect Maibong and Umrangso.
How many days
2 nights: Day 1 Haflong lake + Jatinga ridge; Day 2 Maibong day trip (or Umrangso); out Day 3. Season: October–April; monsoon landslides close hill roads.
Who it’s for
Travellers who did Shillong and want the hills without humans; train-journey collectors; Assam completers pairing it with the Brahmaputra valley. Stay: small hotels and homestays around the lake; carry cash; networks wobble past town. It’s also the natural split on a Guwahati ↔ Silchar run, see the trains-and-buses Northeast.
