Dawki and Shnongpdeng, the Umngot's clear water

By Mapping Memories · Updated 2026-09-24

Green Northeast India hills

Quick answer: Dawki is worth it, in the right season. The Umngot River runs so clear that boats appear to float on air, but only roughly November–March; monsoon turns it brown and furious. Shnongpdeng, a short way upstream, is the calmer, camping-and-kayaking side of the same river. Come December–February, sleep riverside, boat early morning.

The water clarity, honestly

Post-monsoon, the Umngot settles into glass, pebbles visible at depth, boats shadowing on the riverbed. By late spring, pre-monsoon sediments dull it. Clarity is a season, not a guarantee: rain anywhere upstream muddies it for days. Winter visits on dry weeks see the postcard version.

Dawki vs Shnongpdeng

Dawki is the town + the border bridge (India–Bangladesh trade point) + the boat ghat. Busy, functional, famous for the bridge shot. Shnongpdeng, upstream, is where the good stuff moved: riverside camps on white pebble banks, kayaking, zip-line and snorkelling operators, cliff jumps for the brave. Camp one night in Shnongpdeng, boat at Dawki at dawn, and you’ve done both right.

The border question

The Dawki bridge crosses into Bangladesh trade territory, tourists can walk up to the checkpost zone for the view and the photos, but crossing requires proper border formalities (not a tourist activity). The boat rides stay on the Indian side; respect the line and the checkpost staff.

Without a car and on a budget

Shared cabs run Shillong → Jowai/Dawki sides; from Sohra it’s a road down the plateau. Budget travellers pair Dawki with Mawlynnong village (clean-village famous) in one loop. Camping in Shnongpdeng is the budget-hero move, riverside tents with meals are inexpensive; book in the December–February window.

Combine it

Dawki is 2–3 hours from Shillong and an easy add to a Sohra trip, the classic Meghalaya loop is Sohra → Nongriat → Dawki (Meghalaya guide), and it chains perfectly after a Nagaland festival week. Custom plans → WhatsApp us.
