Pause in

Tezpur in January

The north-bank town that opens Arunachal.

Quick answer. Winter. Cool, dry and clear across the Brahmaputra valley, this is peak wildlife season. For Tezpur specifically, January is a comfortable month with the usual hill-state caveats.

Why January here

Da Parbatia’s ancient doorframe, Agnigarh’s legends and the road to Bhalukpong.

Tezpur is the north-bank heritage town: the 6th-century Da Parbatia doorframe, the Agnigarh hill of Usha-Aniruddha legend, and the Brahmaputra at its shoulders. Practically, it is the last full-service town before the Arunachal border at Bhalukpong, about 52km away.

Wildlife this month: Kaziranga and Manas are open and at their best: grass is short and sightings are easiest.

What to do

Da Parbatia

A Gupta-era carved doorframe, among the oldest sculptures in Assam.

Agnigarh

The legend-hill above the river.
