Why January here
Thousands of looms weaving pat, muga and eri silk, across the river from Guwahati.
Sualkuchi is Assam’s handloom town: thousands of household looms weave the state’s famous silks, pat (mulberry), muga (the golden wild silk found only in Assam) and eri. Workshops sell directly and the weaving is visible street-side.
Wildlife this month: Kaziranga and Manas are open and at their best: grass is short and sightings are easiest.
What to do
Muga silk
The golden silk unique to Assam, woven here at scale.
