Hear the looms in

Sualkuchi in February

The silk town of Assam.

Quick answer. Late winter, dry season continues. One of the easiest months to move around the state. For Sualkuchi specifically, February is a comfortable month with the usual hill-state caveats.

Why February here

Thousands of looms weaving pat, muga and eri silk, across the river from Guwahati.

Sualkuchi is Assam’s handloom town: thousands of household looms weave the state’s famous silks, pat (mulberry), muga (the golden wild silk found only in Assam) and eri. Workshops sell directly and the weaving is visible street-side.

Wildlife this month: Wildlife season continues in all parks.

What to do

Muga silk

The golden silk unique to Assam, woven here at scale.
