Sivasagar in January
The Ahom capital’s tanks, towers and palaces.

Why January here
Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar and the great tank: six centuries of Ahom kingship in one town.
Sivasagar was the capital of the Ahom kingdom that ruled the Brahmaputra valley for six centuries. The sights cluster around the great Sivasagar tank: Rang Ghar, the royal pavilion, Talatal Ghar, the multi-storey palace at Rangpur, and Shiva Dol, one of the tallest Shiva temples in India.
Wildlife this month: Kaziranga and Manas are open and at their best: grass is short and sightings are easiest.
What to do
Rang Ghar
The royal sports pavilion, brick-and-rice-paste architecture.
Talatal Ghar
The multi-level palace with its legendary hidden floors.
Charaideo
The Ahom kings’ pyramid-like burial mounds.
