Majuli is the world’s largest river island and the cultural centre of the Neo-Vaishnavite movement founded by Srimanta Sankaradeva. Its satras, monastic institutions, are the heart: Auniati, Kamalabari and Uttar Kamalabari, Dakhinpat, Garamur, Bengenaati and the mask-making Samaguri (Chamaguri) satra.
Life here runs at ferry pace: cycling between satras, looms and Mishing villages, and if you time it to the November full moon, the Raas Mahotsav plays through the night.
