Ferry out to

Majuli in January

The river island where Assam keeps its soul.

Quick answer. Winter. Cool, dry and clear across the Brahmaputra valley, this is peak wildlife season. For Majuli specifically, January is a comfortable month with the usual hill-state caveats.

Why January here

The world’s largest river island: satra monasteries, mask-makers, looms and the November Raas.

Majuli is the world’s largest river island and the cultural centre of the Neo-Vaishnavite movement founded by Srimanta Sankaradeva. Its satras, monastic institutions, are the heart: Auniati, Kamalabari and Uttar Kamalabari, Dakhinpat, Garamur, Bengenaati and the mask-making Samaguri (Chamaguri) satra.

Wildlife this month: Kaziranga and Manas are open and at their best: grass is short and sightings are easiest.

What to do

Satra mornings

Prayer, dance practice and elephant-quiet courtyards at Auniati.

Mask-makers

Samaguri satra’s three-dimensional mukhas, made for centuries.

Raas Mahotsav

Night-long Krishna plays across the island, November full moon.
