Wander into

Hajo in January

Where temples, mosques and shrines share one hilltown.

Quick answer. Winter. Cool, dry and clear across the Brahmaputra valley, this is peak wildlife season. For Hajo specifically, January is a comfortable month with the usual hill-state caveats.

Why January here

Hayagriva Madhava, Powa Mecca and a rare multi-faith pilgrimage landscape, half an hour from Guwahati.

Hajo, about 30km from Guwahati, is a pilgrimage town shared by faiths: the Hayagriva Madhava temple on Monikut hill (some traditions link it to Buddhist heritage), the Powa Mecca dargah, and older shrine sites across the hills.

Wildlife this month: Kaziranga and Manas are open and at their best: grass is short and sightings are easiest.

What to do

Hayagriva Madhava

Hilltop Vishnu temple with far-river views.

Powa Mecca

An important Islamic pilgrimage site of the region.
