The Nyishi people
The largest community of central Arunachal, hornbill-cap chiefs of the Kameng and Subansiri.
The Nyishi are Arunachal’s largest tribal group, spread across the Kameng and Subansiri hill country. Their traditional dress features the hornbill-cap (bopia) with the great bird’s beak, and their festival is Nyokum, the February worship for prosperity.
The Nyishi’s conservation story is modern and famous: ex-hunters of Pakke became the paid guardians of hornbill nests, a model studied worldwide.
