The Apatani people

The Apatani of Ziro valley farm some of the most sophisticated terraces in the Himalaya: rice-and-fish co-cultivation, irrigation channels managed by custom, and a settled valley culture surrounded by hills of pine. Their land system is why Ziro sits on India’s UNESCO tentative list.

Older Apatani women traditionally wore facial tattoos and nose plugs (yaping hullo), a practice now ended but remembered by the elder generation. Dree, their festival, fills early July.

Ask before photographing people or rituals, dress modestly at festivals and ceremonies, accept hospitality graciously, and let local hosts lead. Culture here is lived, not performed: curiosity with manners opens every door.
